Phone line always busy and if you are lucky enough to get through you can only get a telephone appointment with a doctor. I have managed this a couple of times but the first call back was much earlier than I was expecting and the second an hour and half later, which is not acceptable when you have other things to attend to! Also I don't like the lack of privacy when you have to discuss your symptoms etc. over the phone, as there always seems to be someone around who can hear. I had to phone back for test results which luckily were OK according to the receptionist but I still have the problem and can only get another telephone appointment when I think a doctor should SEE my symptoms!!! So where do I go from here??? The system IN THEORY seems ok, to ease the workload which I appreciate is very high but it just does not work for the patients.

Response from St Thomas Road Health Centre

The appointment system has been “tweaked” many times over the past twelve months to try and improve it for both the patients and the Doctors. After their recent strategy meeting where the comments from the friends and family test were taken into consideration the Partners have once again made some changes to the appointment system. There are now some telephone triage appointments and “face to face “consultations available, when you phone for an appointment the receptionist will ask you some questions in order to make sure you see/speak to the relevant clinician you do not have to give personal information. Please be aware that depending on the problem you may need to see either a nurse, Minor illness clinic, Clinical Practitioner or Doctor. The more information you give the easier it will be to direct you to the appropriate clinician. Patients who do not wish to give any information to the receptionist will be offered a telephone consultation. Receptionists will only be able to book a “Face to Face” consultation when they are given the relevant information to determine which clinic is appropriate. Whilst the majority are bookable on the day there are a number of telephone triage appointments that can be pre booked up to two weeks in advance either over the phone or on line. You must register at reception for on line services please bring in photographic ID with you.

The telephone appointment system is a nightmare. I work outside of Newquay, as I can imagine many people do. I have phone a number of times with something that i KNOW a doctor will need to see/discuss with me in person - however I have to take time off work to just get through to book the phone appointment, on the off chance that I MIGHT get an appointment that day. I have 'risked' it before and made the call from work to be told i could have an appointment in half an hour - when I turned this down, I was told 'well it cannot be that urgent then'. APPALLING!!!! I appreciate that the GP's are under strain due to increasing patient numbers - however, there needs to be some understanding that there will be certain illnesses etc that require you to actually see a doctor, or indeed that are hard to discuss which is made harder, if not impossible to talk about over the phone. When you do eventually get an appointment and the doctor says 'come back and see me in a week', you then go and make that appointment at reception to be told' you will have to phone on the day'....no wonder people are just bypassing GP's and going straight to A&E! Please sort it out!

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I currently don't have a telephone. Newquay Health Centre cannot make me an appointment to see the Dr as she needs to call me first... Absolute joke and not patient friendly at all.

Phone appointment are a joke. So, I have to take a day off work to speak to a doctor on the phone? Have to keep trying to ring for over 15 minutes before you even get through. Then they call you back and after the first question answered they just hang up the phone? Call back to reception and they do nothing at all? Really shocking service. All I want is to see a doctor to talk face to face about my problems. Also over the past years on every visit I have never been given full and correct information.

The telephone appointment system makes it impossible for me to speak privately to the doctor, whether I am at home or work, as I can be heard by others in both places . I have been unable to discuss a particular health problem for months. Apart from the practicalities of people around me,it can be very difficult to discuss some things over the phone without seeing the person you are talking to. Prescriptions are often wrong, and different to what is ordered. One is frequently left without needed medication due to the this.
